Alex Dimitriu, MD

Menlo Park Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine

We are increasingly interacting with computers and electronic devices in our daily lives. Fortunately, these interactions can yield valuable date and information about our own patterns of behavior, activity and sleep. Whether the device is a FitBit, Jawbone, MyZeo, or other activity or sleep monitor - we are more than happy (and interested) to incorporate such data into diagnosis and monitoring of outcomes.

Dr Dimitriu's training in sleep medicine, had a strong emphasis on biometrics, the measurement of human behavior - especially in the monitoring of daytime activity and sleep quality.

POLYSOMNOGRAPHY - the analysis of sleep, involves monitoring of numerous variables over each night. Most commonly, brain wave activity, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, airflow, chest movement, muscle tone and eye movements are monitored throughout the night. Medications as well as psychological states can have significant impacts on these parameters - and it is very helpful to see patterns emerge as a result of lifestyle modification, or medication treatment.

ACTIGRAPHY - refers to the continuous monitoring of motion and light levels throughout the day. This is easily achieved by a wrist worn device which is able to record sleep and wake activity for up to 2 weeks. Such measurements can be very helpful in identifying changes in activity levels, sleep patterns, and some basic measure of overall sleep quality.

CONTINUOUS PERFORMANCE TESTING - a computer based application that monitors ability for sustained focus and attention. By monitoring the speed and accuracy of responses, a thorough report is generated with information about key cognitive factors; such as: impulsivity, reaction time, errors or omission, and errors of commission. Results are adjusted for age and gender, and presented in an extensive report. We have successfully implemented this application to identify key areas for improvement, and also monitor outcomes before and after treatment.

SLEEP MONITORING - we currently employ several applications to obtain objective measures of sleep quantity and quality, and also assess the outcome to medication or behavioral interventions. In the near future, we will be able to offer complete sleep studies from the office, with detailed review during your visit.
